Luther George Simjian, the inventor of the ATM machine and unique story


Luther George Simjian was one of the inventor and scientist who lived long enough. He was born in Turkey on January 28, 1905, and died on October 23, 1997 at the age of 92 years.


Young Simjian migrated to the United States at the age of 15 years, since separated from her family during World War I. After meeting with his relatives in Connecticut, he began to study independently by working as a photographer in accordance with a field of interest.

At the beginning, Simjian studied at Yale University by taking the field of Medicine.  However, his interest changed when The University provides jobs in the Laboratory of Images. In 1928, he assumed the post of Director in the Department of Photography at the University.

In 1934 Simjian moved to New York, where he developed X-ray machine color and self-posing portrait camera, which allows the subjects to look into the mirror and see the exact image that will be taken.

Armed with this discovery, Simjian set up a camera manufacturing company and sell the license to use the camera on a mini studio that is placed in a department store with a name which was subsequently renamed Photoreflex Reflectone name. These companies then continue to develop optical, and electro-mechanical devices.

When Simjian offer ideas to make the customer's bank finacial transaction without meeting with the teller, he doubted many people. Do not know surrender, in 1939, Simjian registering 20 patents relating to devices these new findings, and offers its findings to a larger company that is now known as Citicorp. Only after 6 months later, Citicorp respond to an offer Simjian it.

  "Apparently, people who will use this machine is only a small number of prostitutes and gamblers are embarrassed and do not want to meet face to tellers" wrote Simjian.


Oops, it turns out today on every street corner, we can easily find the machine "magic" is. What are the doubts many people at that time was not proven.

ATMs have become an integral requirement for most people who live in cities. Simjian discovery that at first doubted, now has helped many people with the presence of convenience through ATM machines.
